The 1,276-mile journey east to pick up my new puppy (already named Sally in my head) at Wildrum Kennels began on the morning of Thursday the 18th when Andrew and I pulled out of my driveway in Missoula, truck full of dog supplies and butterflies in my stomach. Andrew’s gracious offer to join me and help with the drive definitely made the whole trip way easier on me and allowed me to talk through my anxieties about picking “the right” pup, which, for the record, is something I had lost a fair amount of sleep over!Read More
One of the many things that makes Montana feel like home is the ease with which I can partake in nearly all of my favorite outdoor activities. In the past eleven months of living in Missoula, Ginger and I have explored outstanding new rivers with a fly rod, hiked to gorgeous alpine lakes, photographed breathtaking views and wildlife, and spent our first full bird season together chasing grouse...Read More
Spring semester at the University of Montana is coming to an end and I am finding it harder and harder to avoid self-reflection.Read More
Earlier this month, I was lucky enough to receive an invitation to visit Wildrum Kennels in northwest Wisconsin. Having met the owner, Ray, and his family this past summer in Idaho, I was thrilled to spend more time with them and get to know their posse of Wirehaired Pointing Griffons... For those of you who follow my Instagram account, you already know that Ray also has a litter of pups right now (10!) so it didn't take much convincing to get me on a plane!Read More
I am tired of the social stigma surrounding depression and other mental illnesses. Every time an article pops up in my news feed about someone struggling with mental illness, I cringe at the comments section. I find it hard to comprehend how we, as a society, allow people’s misinformed attitudes toward mental health to persist. For lack of a better idea, I’ve decided to publicly share my own experiences with depression in the hopes that someone might read this and cause them to sway their outlook on the matter.Read More
Summer seemed to fly by faster than usual this year! Between guiding, managing the fly shop, Lava Lake social media, and odd jobs thrown in here and there, sleep was definitely not a priority. One of my best friends from high school and a friend of my sister's lived with our family while they interned for the ranch, which was a complete blast! Our house was most definitely packed...Read More
The Pioneer Mountains offer endless opportunities for adventure in some of Idaho's wildest country. Including many of the state's highest peaks, the Pioneers draw all sorts of climbers, hikers, skiers, etc., and the high alpine lakes carved by glaciers long ago make the perfect camping destinations in the area. The fishing is pretty phenomenal, too, but I usually wait until the rivers are less turbid later in the summer...Read More
The craze at Silver Creek surrounding the famous Brown Drake hatch has begun; although there are many fantastic aquatic insect hatches in the West, the Brown Drake hatch is hard to beat, and there are only a few days each year to experience it. Yesterday at the Picabo Angler (where I work/guide), the phone was ringing off the hook with folks wanting to reserve beats on private water, inquiring about different fly patterns, and lots of anglers wandered into the shop to "shoot the shit," have a cold beer, and wait for dusk...Read More
The fly shop I work and guide for has been busy over the past few days since the opener on Saturday! The rain has slowed down and the weather is warming up, which means that the mystical Brown Drake hatch is bound to start any day now. We all have our favorite drake patterns tucked carefully into our fly boxes in anticipation...Read More
Hello to the beanstream!
Ray Wolfram of Wildrum Kennels here as a guest blogger on Phoebe's great site. We are excited to be working with Phoebe and the beanstream to bring the upland community useful and entertaining content.
Everyone who knows Phoebe, knows that her love for a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon named Ginger runs deep. This is where the connection between Phoebe & I was formed - a common interest in a great breed of bird dog. So... Compliments of a crazy little concept called hashtags on Instagram, here we are blogging for the beanstream...Read More
